Alpharetta, Georgia

 

Alpharetta is a city in north Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It is one of the most affluent communities in the state. According to a 2008 estimate, Alpharetta's population is 49,903.

Selected for its location next to a spring, it began as a campground, originally known as New Prospect Camp Ground until late 1858. Officially chartered on December 11 of that year, Alpharetta (supposedly Greek for "first town") served as the county seat of Milton County until the end of 1931 when Milton was merged with Fulton County to avoid bankruptcy during the Great Depression.


Despite Alpharetta's poor start, and it being one of the more distal, large suburbs in metro Atlanta, Alpharetta now features several mid-risebuildings, which are home to many high-tech companies including Hewlett-Packard, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, RedPrairie, Radiant Systems, Infor, Lucent, Nortel, IBM, Sun Microsystems, AT&T, Siemens, McKesson Corporation, Verizon, Verizon Wireless, Alltel, E-Trade, Hansgrohe, General Electric, and LexisNexis, and Forbes online rated it as the number 1 "reloville" in the United States.

Public elementary schools in Alpharetta include Alpharetta Elementary School, Creek View Elementary School, Lake Windward Elementary School, Manning Oaks Elementary School, and New Prospect Elementary School.

Cogburn Woods Elementary School in Milton, Crabapple Crossing Elementary School in Milton, Hembree Springs Elementary School in Roswell, Mimosa Elementary School in Roswell, and Summit Hill Elementary School in Milton serve portions of Alpharetta.

Public middle schools located in Alpharetta include Haynes Bridge Middle School and Webb Bridge Middle SchoolAutrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek, Elkins Pointe Middle School in Roswell, Hopewell Middle School in Milton, and Northwestern Middle School in Milton serve portions of Alpharetta.

Amana Academy, a public charter school which is part of the Fulton County School system and provides education for students in Kindergarten to 8th grade, is in Alpharetta. Amana Academy uses the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB) instructional model. The Fulton Science Academy (FSA) is also a public charter school. FSA follows a different approach to science and mathematics and contains multiple academic extra-curricular activities. It is located near Alpharetta in Roswell.

Alpharetta High School serves most of Alpharetta. Centennial High School in Roswell, Chattahoochee High School in Johns Creek, Milton High School in Milton, and Roswell High School in Roswell serve sections of Alpharetta.

Most visitors to Alpharetta drive northeast from Atlanta on Route 400 and many tourists who stop in Alpharetta are en route to Lake Chatuge, one of North Georgia’s premier resort destinations. The largest and most popular public park in Alpharetta is Wills Park where the Alpharetta Arboretum is located. Visitors will enjoy the Alpharetta Arboretum because it is a living museum that showcases the natural beauty of many native tree species from the Southeastern United States.

 

Annual festivals in Alpharetta

April is a great time to visit Alpharetta because that is when the annual Arts Streetfest occurs. During Arts Streetfest, Alpharetta’s downtown streets are closed to traffic and filled with vendors displaying original artwork created by people from all over the United States. Live jazz and acoustical music concerts are presented on various stages, cultural arts performances are given in Wills Park and an abundance of festive foods are available for sampling. Another very popular annual festival held during the month of May is Taste of Alpharetta, which has been attracting more than 70,000 food connoisseurs to Alpharetta each year for over 20 years. Admission is free and food samples generally cost between 50 cents and $3.00 each. The Taste of Alpharetta festival also includes live jazz, rock and contemporary music concerts, recorded music presented by 14 metro Atlanta radio stations, a small kids fun zone and an older kids fun zone. The Taste of Alpharetta festival is held in Wills Park located on Old Milton Parkway in Alpharetta.During September the City of Alpharetta, the Alpharetta Lions Club and the Alpharetta Historical Society sponsor the Old Milton Country Fair at the old Milton High School. This is an old fashioned country fair with live bluegrass music, outdoor barbecues and authentic country foods, old time children’s carnival games, horse rides and even pie eating contests. Farmers bring their fresh produce to the fair, home bakers bring fresh homemade pies, jams and jellies while at the same time in downtown Alpharetta, weavers, spinners, quilters, blacksmiths and candle makers demonstrate old time crafts and trades. The Old Milton County Fair is a large social gathering that offers visitors a wonderful opportunity to learn about life in Alpharetta.
